What is the Roof Overhang on a Park Home?

The term ‘roof overhang’ refers to the horizontal extension of the roof beyond the exterior walls of a Park Home.

Having a roof overhang on a Park Home allows for the installation of External Wall Insulation (EWI) by providing the correct space and protection for the insulation materials and the application process.

Without a roof overhang, applying External Wall Insulation (EWI) may result in the walls protruding further than the roofline, to counter this, we install a product called Verge Trim, an aluminium weather protection barrier and finishing strip.

A preexisting roof overhang helps to give an end for the insulation to butt up to.

Roof overhangs serve several functional and aesthetic purposes on a Park Home, including the following:

Weather Protection

The primary function of a roof overhang is to provide protection from the elements, such as rain, snow, and sunlight. By extending beyond the walls, the overhang helps to prevent water from dripping down the exterior walls and protects the building’s foundation from water damage. In place of an overhang, Verge Trim serves this purpose.

Sun and Shade Control

Depending on its size and orientation, a roof overhang can help control the amount of sunlight entering the building. In warmer climates, a properly sized overhang can provide shade to windows and walls, reducing solar heat gain and cooling costs. Conversely, in colder climates, a smaller overhang may allow more sunlight to enter, providing passive solar heating benefits.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Roof overhangs can contribute to the architectural style and visual appeal of a building. They can add dimension and depth to the facade, creating a more interesting and attractive exterior. Additionally, decorative elements such as brackets or trim can be added to the overhang to enhance its appearance.

Eaves Storage

In some cases, roof overhangs may provide space for the installation of storage compartments or attic vents. This additional space can be utilised for storing outdoor equipment or for improving attic ventilation, which helps regulate indoor temperature and moisture levels.

Rainwater Management

Roof overhangs play a role in directing rainwater away from the building’s foundation. By extending beyond the walls, they help to channel rainwater into gutters and downpipes, which then carry it safely away from the structure to prevent water infiltration and potential flooding.

In the context of a Park Home, roof overhangs are typically designed to suit the specific requirements of the structure and may vary in size depending on factors such as climate, architectural style, and building regulations. Properly designed and installed roof overhangs can contribute to the durability, energy efficiency, and overall comfort of a park home.

What if my home doesn’t have an overhang?

Worry not, if your home doesn’t have an overhang, we can either install Verge Trim, or we can extend your current roof to make an overhang, depending on your preference.
